Nap Town Chickens Tour de Coop

Tour de Coop recap

Nap Town Chickens, a community organization promoting backyard chickens in an urban setting, held its’ inaugural Tour de Coops on September 18. Billed as the Meridian-Kessler home tour of backyard chicken coops, Tour de Coops showcased 12 coops in the northern neighborhoods of Broad Ripple, Butler-Tarkington and Rocky Ripple.

The self-guided bicycle tour began at Broad Ripple Park with a suggested $5 donation that benefited both Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and INDYCOG—two organizations that are working hard to improve the community. The event was a huge success, raising more than $4,000 and educating 500 participants on the details of raising backyard chickens.

“We could not believe the turnout, and the number of bicyclists,” said Andrew Brake of Nap Town Chickens. “There was a line to the stoplight on Broad Ripple Ave. For more than 45 minutes as folks checked in for the tour, and people couldn’t wait to buy a t-shirt or register for the coop raffle.”

Tourists re-coop-erated at Union Jack Pub, on Broad Ripple Ave. after the tour; and participated in a raffle to win a custom-made chicken coop donated by Mark Mann of Mann Made Products. Renee Sweany, was the lucky winner. Sponsors for the event included: Union Jack Pub, Backyard Birds, Indy Cycle Specialist, BJava Coffee, G. Thrapp Jewelers, PIP Printing, QuantumFit, Piazza Produce, Upland Brewery, Flat 12 Bierwerks, Pedal n’ Park, Honeysuckle Home, AV Framing Gallery, Perk Up Coffee, Mann Made Products, BRICS and Big Car Gallery.

Preparations are underway for next year’s tour, and those interested in showcasing their coop or sponsoring the event are encouraged to contact Andrew Brake at abrake@kibi.org, or by phone at 317- 938-1199.

I am up in Pendleton in a non-chicken environment (more restrictions than barbed wire). Nonetheless, I am interested in chickens in the backyard. Except to move in a few years and plan to move to someplace antenna and chicken friendly. Will content myself to your tours and reading about chickens in the interim.
