Supporting the Body’s Aging Process

Keeping a flexible mindset is a tool for surrendering with ease to life’s ebbs and flows. It creates a youthful attitude which allows a willingness to try new things and adopt new habits. A youthful attitude creates an inner timeless vitality which is reflected in physical health and beauty.

The daily stresses of life can both cloud a person’s mind with worry and take a toll on mental, physical and emotional well-being. Higher stress levels can impact the body’s ability to fight off sickness and cause premature aging. However, there are ways to age gracefully by returning to and maintaining a youthful attitude to build inner peace and vitality. Resources that promote this state of mind come from positive community connections, regular yoga practice, exercise, meditation, herbs and clean food.

Agelessness from Community Connection

Positive community interactions build a sense of empowerment and well-being as members share stories and teach each other useful tools for savvy living. One example is the first inaugural Red Tent Workshop and Festival held recently at White Pine Wilderness Academy. Attendees partook in this community-oriented event to build sisterhood, share goals and learn health tips on a range of topics, including Herbalism for Menopause, Foods for the Moon Cycle & Hormone Health, Sacred Pregnancy and Feminine Intuition.

The festival that followed the workshop included an afternoon of yoga, live music and holistic vendors. Attending events like these helps build connections between likeminded individuals while allowing children to meet new friends and parents to connect without the need to find a babysitter.

Agelessness from Yoga Practice

“The true indicator of a person’s age is the flexibility of their spine,” said Yogi Bhajan, Kundalini Yoga master who brought kundalini yoga to the United States. Flexibility in the spine creates a freedom of movement within the body which allows the body to stay youthful and limber.

“In yoga philosophy, there are seven major chakra centers that govern health,” says Hari Datti Kaur, who teaches Kundalini classes at White Pine Wilderness Academy. They store emotion and energy that can be released. When stored unexpressed emotions are released from the body, it creates a sense of mental lightness and clarity.

“To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we should not be able to keep our mind strong and clear,” said Buddha.

Creating fitness goals and maintaining them are essential for making sure the body is sweating regularly to expel toxins, which may help slow down the aging process. Building strength also creates a sense of achievement and confidence.

Geared toward staying active and healthy throughout a long life, AgeSucessfully, located in Fishers, helps men and women create goals for healthy aging through fitness and physical health. Goals are created through health assessments and are accomplished through group workout sessions, hiking, playing with grandchildren and golfing. Their approach is tailored to each individual’s health and medical needs.

Agelessness from Meditation

Meditation creates an inner state of peace where the mental mind chatter slows down and thoughts dissolve. As this takes place, the body relaxes. Sue Morter, of Morter Health Center, teaches bimonthly meditation classes open to beginners and experienced meditators. Upcoming dates are October 7 and December 21 from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Morter Health Center. She combines concepts of enlightenment and embodiment designed to elevate vibrational frequencies in order to more easily align with intended life paths. Additional styles of meditation practiced in the community include isha yoga and Buddhist meditation.

Agelessness from Clean Eating & Herbs

Anti-aging herbs and chemical-free food improve energy and stamina. Ezra’s Enlightened Café focuses on organic foods and also offers a plethora of herbal drinks, including an elixir shot made from Chinese beauty herbs, goji and schizandra berries, which are believed to improve elasticity of the skin to prevent wrinkles.

According to community herbalist Constance Ferry, motherwort preserves vitality during menopause and may help to calm emotions and reduce hot flashes.
