Modalities for Improved Health

As chronic stress and pain become all too common in our high-tech, full-throttle society, Indianapolis area residents are increasingly seeking alternative, minimally invasive ways to manage their well-being. Check out these alternative health modalities for a glimpse into more natural pain and stress management options.

Good Vibrations: Vibrational Sound Therapy

Vibrational Sound Therapy, also known as “sound massage”, originates in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and India. Sound massage is a modality that changes consciousness by invoking the same deeply relaxed brain wave patterns that come from profound meditation.

Such sessions may be used for a variety of reasons, from relaxing to energizing, depending on individual needs. Vibrational sound therapy practitioners utilize singing bowls to help raise and lower vibrational energy around the body moving either from the feet toward the head or vice versa.

The use of singing bowls of various sizes helps release of tension leading the individual to slip into alpha brainwave patterns—similar to what is experienced in daydreaming or right before sleep. The slowing of respiration and one’s heart rate helps to release of tension and stress throughout the body.

“Vibrational sound therapy allows gentle vibrations to flow through every cell of your body easing tension, stress and pain,” says Becky Hillman, vibrational sound therapy-certified practitioner and owner of Good Vibrations. “It relaxes, resets and renews your body, mind and spirit.”

NeuroHealth Services: Chronic Pain Management Options

Combining a researchbased system of Functional Neurology and Functional Medicine, NeuroHealth Services offers patient-specific pain management that’s not pharmaceutical-based or invasive.

Individual treatment plans are determined, in part, through the use of a comprehensive functional blood chemistry evaluation that helps identify imbalances in the body’s metabolism. Essentially, the test functions as an easy assessment focusing on the nervous system and its interaction with the endocrine and immune systems to determine the presence of disease or one’s risk for disease before it occurs.

“We use chiropractic manipulation, soft tissue therapy and laser therapy,” says Dr. Brad Ralston. “We deal a lot with chronic pain that has more of a neurological side to it.”

Ralston describes chronic pain like a virus that gets loose in the brain and rewires it. As a result, most chronic pain patients experience cognitive, behavioral and neurological changes.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also utilized to help control pain, Ralston says. This method uses a hyperbaric chamber which allows oxygen to be dissolved into the blood to increase blood oxygen levels. As oxygen levels in the blood increase, pain decreases.

“Hyperbaric oxygen hyperoxygenates your body,” he says. “Oxygen is great for dealing with pain. A lot of pain comes from a lack of oxygen in the nerves.”

Morter HealthCenter: Stress Reduction to Support Well-being

Chiropractic care focuses on the individual as a whole with the perspective there are three types of stress that can adversely affect the body.

There is physical stress that oftentimes results from trauma (or injury), toxicity that originates in one’s environment or diet, and there is neuro-emotional stress that is directly related to the mind and its ability to handle unresolved stress.

The Neuro Emotional Technique (NET), which is employed by Morter HealthCenter, can help determine what type of stress is primary for an individual. Once the stress or stressors are determined, a Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique (B.E.S.T.) treatment program is established for the individual.

“We can recommend exercise and therapy, the type of nutritional work that allows us through kinesiology to address any dietary changes that need to be made or correct imbalances within the body, which can lead to illness as well,” says Dr. Vicki Knapke.

The neuro-emotional component comes from the background—any emotional trauma a person may have experienced, Knapke says.

“A lot of times people are not consciously aware of the trauma or how to shift it because it is shuffled off into the background and the body goes into fight or flight mode,” Knapke says. “What we offer is choices specifically for them in how to apply six of the essentials and which one is going to get them the results they’re looking for.”

Be Well Family Care: Functional Medicine

Be Well Family Care offers a holistic approach to family health. According to Swathi Rao, PA-C, their treatments and services are rooted in personalized functional medicine, which means one’s overall health, including genetics, environment and lifestyle, are taken into account in order to find and treat the root cause of disease to prevent illness.

“It’s a blend of traditional and alternative medicines that primarily focuses on getting to the root of an imbalance or symptom,” she says. “The goal is to treat disease and not waiting for disease.”

The staff understands that every person is unique in their genetic makeup and that understanding can make a major difference.

“Each of us has different stressors and each of us responds differently to our stressors,” Rao says. “This is where the patient and practitioner enter into a partnership and find a specific way to heal.”

In addition to personalized care and longer office visits—allowing for more in-depth, personalized care, patients have access to ongoing classes, events and educational opportunities.

Location: Be Well Family Care, 11495 North Pennsylvania St., Ste. 270, Indianapolis. For more information, call 317- 938-4559 or visit BeWellFamilyCare.com.
