National Walking Day 2019 to Promote Benefits of Walking

Each year, the American Heart Association (AHA) sponsors National Walking Day on the first Wednesday of April to build awareness about the healthy benefits of going for a stroll. On April 3, participants are encouraged to get up and move, and document their walking activities through social media using the hashtag #NationalWalkingDay.

Established in 2007, National Walking Day is a great opportunity to commit to taking 30 minutes to simply walk.

The AHA recommends participants wear comfortable clothes and shoes, make sure to stretch prior to walking, and drink plenty of water. Don’t care to walk alone? Take a friend!

Locally, the Centers of Wellness for Urban Women, Inc., is sponsoring an organized walk from 6 to 7 p.m., April 3, at Riverside Park, in Indianapolis. There will also be a virtual run event presented by Moon Joggers from April 3 to 30. Participants may complete a one-mile, 5K or 10K virtual walk at their own pace throughout April and earn a medal at the end.

Cost to participate starts at $20 per person with 15 percent of each entry fee benefiting the American Heart Association. Location: Riverside Park, 2420 East Riverside Dr. For more information, visit For more information about the virtual walk, visit
